About this indicator

What it measures

Foreign direct investment entering the reporting economy, less disinvestment, expressed as a percentage of GDP.

How to interpret it

Negative values mean disinvestment exceeded new inflows. This is not inward investment minus residents’ outward investment.

Important limitation

Large transactions can cause sharp annual swings and values above 100%. Reporting and coverage differ across countries.

Year-on-year change compares consecutive observed years only. Percentage-based indicators show percentage-point differences; other indicators show percentage change. Missing values remain missing.
